Relief effort for Chabad — Rabbi Moishe and Leah Winner are trying to reconstruct their synagogue, Chabad Neshama, in Brighton Beach, N.Y., a community that saw “mountains of sand and thousands of gallons of ocean and sewer water destroying homes and possessions.”
The shul, library, kosher catering wall and commercial kitchen were flooded. Two-thirds of the Hebrew preschool and a camp program also were destroyed. The Winners are also helping those suffering in the community, including re-connecting loved ones and delivering food to those stuck in high-rise condos.
Leah Winner’s sister in Palm Beach, Hindel Levitin of Chabad of Northern Palm Beach Island, is helping the relief effort by collecting donations. Levitin and daughters Rivka, 8, and Mirel, 7, will sell water and lemonade and Hindel Levitin’s homemade cookies from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the sidewalk at 234 Australian Ave.
Damage to the Chabad exceeded $350,000. The rabbi said people can donate by going to ChabadNeshama.com/HurricaneSandy or by mail, Chabad Neshama Center, 2997 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11235.
