Childhood Holocaust survivor speaks — Alan Wainberg of Palm Beach Gardens described his experiences as a child during the Holocaust to about 50 guests April 17 at the Chabad of Northern Palm Beach Island’s Holocaust Memorial Evening at The Chesterfield.

Wainberg was born in 1937 in Zelechow, Poland. By age 5, during the Nazi occupation, he was forced into hiding with family members and others, first in an alcove in a hidden ceiling and then for two years beneath a farm-house with 20-30 people, which eventually came under attack by oulaws. His sister and an aunt were among those killed.

On the run, family members hid in farmers’ fields. It was traumatic and frightening.

“Jews were turned in for sacks of sugar,” Wainberg said.

He and family were liberated by Russian forces in the summer of 1944. Wainberg and his brother made their way to Czechoslovakia and then France, where they were reunited with their parents. He attended school in the United States and immigrated permanently in 1959.
