Local synagogues are planning for Purim, which celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia. It will begin at sundown Saturday and end at nightfall Sunday.
The holiday represents the triumph of good over evil and is based on the biblical Book of Esther. During the holiday, there is charitable giving, and celebrants wear masks and costumes and enjoy a festive Purim meal.
At local synagogues:
* Chabad of Northern Palm Beach Island: Reservations are being taken for a complimentary bagels-and-lox festive meal at 8:15 p.m. Saturday at The Chabad House, 361 S. County Road. Hear the Purim story and bid farewell to the Shabbat queen.
On Sunday, a Purim in Paris Ball will feature croissants, French cuisine and an Eiffel Tower at The Chesterfield, 363 Cocoanut Row. Those attending may come dressed up in a Parisian or Purim costume. Also hear actor and comedian Reuven Russell. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. Call 659-3884 or visit palmbeachjewish.com/purim.
* Chabad of South Palm Beach has two events Sunday. From 9 a.m. to noon, it is coordinating a Purim event for ages 2-15 at Aquanuts at the Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa, 100 S. Ocean Blvd., Manalapan. Dress as your favorite Purim character and bake traditional three-cornered Hamantash cookies, craft Purim characters out of candy, and create a gragger noisemaker. Parents are welcome to join; drop-off service is available. To reserve a spot, call 540-4833. On Sunday night, a Purim in the Big Apple celebration and dinner with live Klezmer and Yiddish music will take place at the Chabad. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. RSVP to 351-1633.
