The anniversary of the passing of a legendary Jewish mystic will be observed at a special event at 6 p.m. May 7 at Phipps Ocean Park, 2201 S. Ocean Blvd. The event is known as Lag B’Omer Kumzitz is being hosted by Chabad of Northern Palm Beach Island.

As the sun sets, there will be a barbecue and marshmallow roast with live guitar music. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or beach chair.

Although Lag B’Omer is the anniversary of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s death, in accordance with his wishes it is treated as a celebration day. In the evening, bonfires are kindled, in honor of the shining spiritual light that followers say bar Yochai, author of the Zohar (the foundation for Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism), brought into the world.
